SESSION: Keynote - The Future of IBM-Informix

SPEAKER: Don Top, VP, IBM Informix Product Development

Don Top began his technology career answering product questions on the phone for Informix Software in 1986.  Over the next 6 years he became the most senior advanced support engineer at Informix, with ultimate responsibility for diagnosing the most difficult problems experienced by Informix database customers.  Don then spent 6 years engineering improvements to Informix's new Dynamic Scalable Architecture (DSA) engine, concentrating on high availability and product serviceability.  He then managed development, and in 1997 directed all development for IDS 7.3, the product currently in use by more Informix customers than any other database engine.  For the last 3 years prior to IBM's acquisition, Don was Vice President of Product Development at Informix Software, beginning with full responsibility for Informix Extended Parallel Server (XPS) and, in August 2000, became responsible for all product development at Informix, overseeing the activities of 500+ engineers.  Upon IBM's acquisition of the Informix database business in July 2001, Don retained this responsibility over continuing development of the Informix product.  In March 2002, Don stepped into the new role of Informix Customer Advocacy Executive where he now ensures the issues and concerns of the Informix customer and partner base receive the necessary attention.

Technical Sessions

SESSION: IDS Internals and Disk Structures.  Everything you never knew!

SPEAKER: Art Kagel, Bloomberg, L.P.

Phone:  212-318-2697
Email: kagel@bloomberg.net

Detailed description of IDS 7 & 9 internals including many reserved page data structures.  Attendees will gain a clearer knowledge of the internal structure of IDS servers and databases.  Observant attendees will have the tools to build utilities to peruse the reserved pages.  Brave attendees may be able to repair minor damage, rename chunks, and other operations they should never attempt.

Art S. Kagel has been using Informix database products since the first SQL version of 4GL, far too long to remember.  He has been the catalyst for bringing relational database technology to several organizations as a consultant and employee.  Art is a recognized expert on the use and maintenance of Informix database servers (a fact to which he readily admits) and is the author of a suite of DBA tools for IDS that extend beyond the functionality of IBM's own Informix tools.

WebSphere is IBM's industry leading Java Enterprise Edition platform for high performance web sites and advanced e-business deployments. IBM Informix IDS is a best-of-breed, general purpose, mission-critical OLTP database for e-business. How do these two excellent offerings interoperate? This session will first review the concepts of Java applications and databases. Then you'll see how to combine WebSphere with Informix.  Additionally the Websphere Application Development Workbench will be used to illustrate object mapping for making Java objects persistent. Metrics for optimal configuration of IBM Informix will be provided as well as hints and tips on application design for optimal performance.
Marty Lurie started his computer career generating chads while attempting to write Fortran on an IBM 1130. His day job is in Systems Engineering for IBM's Informix organization, but if pressed he will admit he mostly plays with computers and has also worked with DB2. His favorite program is the one he wrote to connect his Nordic Track to his laptop (the laptop lost two pounds, and lowered its cholesterol by 20%). Marty is an IBM-certified DB2 DBA, IBM-certified Business Intelligence Solutions Professional, and an Informix-certified Professional and a Certified IBM Senior Consulting IT Specialist.
